CCTV Notice
1. Introduction
USIU-Africa is the data controller of the personal information we collect about you for the stated purposes and the legal basis in this Notice. This means that we are responsible for deciding how we hold and use personal information about you and that we are required to notify you of the information contained in this Notice.
In line with our duty and commitment to maintain a safe and secure environment for students, staff, faculty, contractors and visitors, as well as in compliance with our Security Policy, USIU-Africa operates a network of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems throughout its premises. This Notice explains how CCTV data is collected, used, stored and protected across the University to enhance safety, security and operational effectiveness while respecting the privacy rights of individuals.
2. Scope
This Notice applies to all CCTV monitoring and recording conducted by or on behalf of USIU-Africa in public and semi-public areas including but not limited to the gates and entrances, hallways, libraries, lecture theatres, parking lots and other University facilities.
3. The Types of Cookies We Use
We use CCTV monitoring for the following purposes:
- To ensure safety and security throughout the University
- Deterring and investigating criminal activity
- Supporting law enforcement and emergency responses
- Enforcing university security policies and procedures
- Monitoring access to restricted areas
4. Legal Basis
Our legal basis for CCTV monitoring includes public interest, legitimate interest and compliance with our legal obligations.
5. Data Collected
- Visual recordings of individuals and activities
- Vehicle license plates
- Time and location metadata.
- No audio recording is conducted unless we notify you or we are conducting an investigation based on our legitimate interests.
6. Data Access and Sharing
Access to CCTV data is strictly limited to authorized personnel within the Security Department, investigating officers, director of Human Resources, Divisional Heads and the Vice Chancellor for the purpose of investigations and connected purposes. It may be shared upon request and formal approval, with:
- Law enforcement agencies
- Emergency services
- Authorized personnel
7. Data Retention
We actively retain CCTV data for a period of up to 3months, and longer if it involves an active investigation until it is no longer required for the purpose of the investigation or until its conclusion.
8. Data Security
CCTV data is securely stored on a secure server within the University, with strict access controls ensuring that only authorized personnel can access the data. Additionally, audit logs are maintained to track and monitor access to CCTV data.
