Overview

The M.A. in Communications Studies brings together conceptual, research, and practical approaches through use of technology so as to prepare graduates to handle communication challenges in the current technological environment-including digital and mobile platforms. We employ pedagogical methods that put students at the center of learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Design and implement communication strategies for various types of organizations.
  2. Monitor and evaluate the impact of communication programs.
  3. Manage communication programs and projects in organizations and other settings.
  4. Analyze communication problems in various settings and develop evidence-based solutions.
  5. Apply research approaches and methods to interrogate communication issues at local and international context.
  6. Utilize descriptive digital technologies in communication practice.
  7. Apply theories to explore various societal communication issues.

Dual Accreditation

This degree program is approved by the Commission for University Education and the WASC Senior College and University Commission, ensuring the highest standards have been met in Kenya and the United States.

Admission Requirements

The program admits students once each year, during the Spring semester. All applicants must meet the following requirements:

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, or a related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent. Candidates with at least three (3) years of professional experience in communications or a related field will also be considered.

In addition to the program-specific requirements, applicants must satisfy the University-wide graduate admission requirements, which include:

  • Proof of completion of secondary/high school education, or a signed attestation on the USIU application form (or its equivalent), indicating the month and year of graduation.
  • Official transcripts for all post-secondary education undertaken, with degrees awarded and dates clearly indicated.
  • Submission of a two-page essay addressing the following questions:
    • What experiences led you to select your professional objectives?
    • What other two factors would you like considered in evaluating your application?
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation.
