Prof. Calvin Andeve Omolo is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics, Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice & Public Health, at USIU–Africa. He also serves as an Honorary Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics and Principal Investigator at the Novel Drug Delivery Unit at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), in recognition of his sustained scholarly contributions, postgraduate supervision, and international research leadership.
Prof. Omolo holds a Doctorate and Master’s degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, alongside a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. His academic trajectory is distinguished by excellence in drug delivery science, advanced biomaterials, nanomedicine, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, evidenced by over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 6 book chapters, an h-index of 27, and high-impact outputs featured in journals such as the Journal of Controlled Release, Molecular Pharmaceutics, International Journal of Pharmaceutics, ACS Applied Bio Materials, the Lancet and Advanced Functional Materials.
His research focuses on smart and stimuli-responsive nanosystems, AI and machine-learning-assisted drug discovery, long-acting drug delivery, antimicrobial resistance, HIV/TB therapeutics, innovative formulation design and the use of immersive learning techniques like virtual reality and augmented reality. His leadership in these areas has positioned him as a key contributor to Africa’s pharmaceutical research and development ecosystem. Prof. Omolo’s work is funded by major agencies, including the National Research Foundation (South Africa), the US National Academies, KENET, and internal and external competitive grants at USIU-Africa.
As a policy shaper and national technical expert, Prof. Omolo serves as a resource person to Kenya Biovax Institute, where he contributes to strategic planning and strengthening local vaccine and biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity. He is part of key technical committees in the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya driving regulatory reforms on bioequivalence, manufacturing training, and pharmaceutical quality assurance and a member of the Education & Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee at the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, shaping standards for pharmaceutical education and ensuring pharmacists remain competent and aligned with global best practices.
He is a registered pharmacist in Kenya and Tanzania, and an active member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) and the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA). His contributions extend into curriculum development across Africa, external examining roles, and leadership in accreditation and professional training initiatives.
Prof. Omolo has supervised over 13 Doctoral and Master’s graduates, with several ongoing postgraduate researchers under his mentorship at University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and USIU-Africa. His global footprint includes presentations and invited talks in the United States of America, Europe, and Africa, alongside being recognized as a 2024 U.S.–Africa Frontiers Fellow by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Beyond academia, he supports national and regional health systems through research consultancies, capacity development, and pharmaceutical innovation, ranging from antimicrobial resistance strategies to setting up pharmaceutical manufacturing units. His work has been featured in local and international media for its impact on nanotechnology, drug delivery, and infectious disease therapeutics.
