Last year, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Alum founded Jasper Primary School to respond to gaps in access, affordability, and learning quality in Nyairongo. In its first year of operation, the school has demonstrated that community-centered education can deliver both stability and impact.

Since its official launch, the school has made steady progress in strengthening access to inclusive and innovative education in Nyairongo. Enrollment has remained stable across all three academic terms, increasing from 500 learners at the start of the year to 521 by year-end, with no recorded dropouts. Notably, girls now constitute over 50% of the student population, reflecting a positive shift toward gender equity in education.

As enrollment grows, the school responds by expanding its physical space. The school has expanded its infrastructure by constructing an additional classroom to accommodate learners who have been promoted to Primary Six. Beyond physical expansion, Jasper has invested in teaching quality and learning resources through partnerships. A collaboration with African Leadership Academy under the ALforEducation Apprenticeship Programme strengthened teacher capacity through research-based practice and led to the establishment of the Jasper Digital Library, improving access to quality teaching and learning resources.

Access to Jasper Primary School has significantly transformed learners’ academic outcomes and personal development. Within a year, many pupils who previously struggled with English now communicate confidently both at school and at home, a change that is frequently acknowledged by their parents. Through the Jasper Student Leaders Programme, learners are developing leadership and public-speaking skills, confidently addressing peers during assemblies.

Attendance has improved markedly, with daily class attendance exceeding 80%, driven by proactive teacher follow-ups on absenteeism and a school policy that prioritizes learning continuity over fee-related exclusions. Academically, the school’s strong focus on literacy and numeracy has yielded encouraging results, with Mathematics averaging 70% and English 65% in upper primary classes, indicating strengthened foundational learning.

The presence of Jasper Primary School has positively reshaped parental engagement and community attitudes towards education in Nyairongo. Parents actively participate in school activities through a committed Parents-Teachers Association, working closely with the school administration to promote educational equity and learner retention. Community sensitization initiatives conducted in collaboration with local leaders and churches have contributed to breaking gender-based barriers to education, reflected in the school’s 50% girls’ enrollment.

In December 2025, 69 pupils graduated from Early Childhood Development to Primary School, recording the largest number compared to other private schools in the community in the past three years. This milestone highlights the growing parental support for education. Parents have also embraced regular communication with class teachers, strengthening home-school collaboration and shared accountability for children’s learning.

One of the main challenges Jasper Primary School has faced is limited parental capacity to consistently pay school fees and provide scholastic materials, despite the school’s low-fee model. In response, Jasper has upheld its commitment to inclusive education by ensuring that no child is sent home due to unpaid fees. The school recruited a bursar to engage families directly, facilitate flexible payment arrangements, and maintain open communication, allowing learning to continue uninterrupted while strengthening parental trust.

Recognizing the need for long-term solutions, Jasper developed the Jasper Community Education Programme, scheduled to launch in April 2026, to equip parents with financial literacy skills and promote sustainable financial practices.

As Jasper Primary School enters its second year of operation, its priorities focus on sustainable expansion, improved infrastructure, and enhanced learning quality. The school plans to acquire additional land to construct permanent classrooms and an administration block, creating a more conducive learning environment. Pedagogically, Jasper is committed to fully implementing project-based learning to strengthen learners’ creativity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

In response to growing enrollment, the school also intends to establish independent management structures for the Early Childhood Development and Primary School sections to improve leadership efficiency. Through these efforts, Jasper aims to nurture confident, skilled, and future-ready learners capable of positively transforming their communities.

As the world marked the International Day of Education on January 24, Eric noted that investing in rural education is one of the most impactful and sustainable interventions for driving long-term economic, social, and political development. With over 70% of Africa’s population residing in rural areas, prioritizing education in these communities is not only an economic necessity but also a moral imperative for equitable growth. Jasper Primary School remains committed to working collaboratively with partners who share this vision, championing rural transformation by unlocking the full potential of every child.

By Brenda Odhiambo Eric Ayamba’s vision for an inclusive education is taking shape in Nyairongo, Uganda, where Jasper Primary School is redefining access to inclusive, quality learning for children in a rural community that has long faced educational barriers.
