On February 25, USIU-Africa received a 400ltr Aerobin organic composter donation from Ecoloop Solutions Africa. This donation marks a significant step in the university\u2019s effort to strengthen waste management and environmental sustainability. The donation is a result of ongoing conversations on how best the university can manage organic waste management while actively finding solutions that contribute to its sustainability goals.<\/p>

As an institution that produces quite a considerable amount of organic waste from the dining facilities, offices, and landscaping activities, USIU-Africa is continually finding practical and innovative ways to manage waste without having a heavy carbon footprint. The introduction of the Aerobin composter is a major step in these efforts as it offers an efficient way for on-site composting. This underscores USIU-Africa\u2019s commitment to the greening of its campus.<\/p>

The Aerobin composter is a system that facilitates faster decomposition of organic waste and converts the waste into liquid and solid compost fertilizer. The compost is nutrient-rich and can be used for gardening needs in place of inorganic fertilizers. To maximize compost production, the system can take daily kitchen waste, such as fruit and vegetable peels, as well as outdoor waste such as dry leaves, sawdust, and timber shavings. It is not advisable to put cooked food into the composter as this may attract rodents and may also slow down the decomposition process. To ensure that it is environmentally friendly, the system is 100% Bisphenol A. (BPA) free, and it is also odor-free, which helps in positioning the system anywhere without worrying about the smell that is usually associated with waste material.<\/p>

To ensure proper maintenance and full utilization of the unit, representatives from the Environmental Society Club (ENSO) and the Facilities Management Department were trained on its usage by Ecoloops Solutions Africa. They will primarily be in charge of organic waste collection within the designated spaces in the university and loading the composter. The ENSO club will also be monitoring the composting process and ensuring the overall maintenance of the unit. In the long run, the unit is designed to provide students with opportunities for practical and experiential learning through sustainability and academic projects. As the university embarks on the implementation of the system, the community is called upon to support the initiative by segregating waste.<\/p>
