The session was designed to equip the Mastercard Foundation Scholars with practical skills, industry insight, and professional networks to support their movement from university into employment, enterprise creation, and long-term career growth.

The keynote address was delivered by Fabien de Castilla, Director of Konexio Africa and a social entrepreneur with cross-continental experience in building inclusive economic systems. Drawing on his work in digital workforce development, Fabien emphasized that digital access alone does not automatically create opportunity; it must be intentionally linked to labor market realities and real roles in the economy.

“Without engagement from companies, programs risk remaining disconnected from real employment opportunities,” he noted, urging scholars and institutions alike to prioritize structured pathways that connect training to internships, job placements, and enterprise development. His remarks echoed the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program’s existing emphasis on pairing digital skills development with career placement support and strategic ecosystem partnerships, including Africa Career Networks (ACN).

Fabien also challenged the Mastercard Foundation Scholars to think of digital connectivity as just the starting point, not the destination. “Being digitally connected is only a starting point. The real objective is enabling continuous learning and professional specialization,” he stressed, encouraging Mastercard Foundation Scholars to embrace adaptability, deepen their expertise, and treat career readiness as an ongoing process of learning, reflection, and value creation.

Currently, through partnerships with Konexio Africa and ACN, over 100 Mastercard Foundation Scholars are enrolled in structured digital skills training, with more than 40 Mastercard Foundation Scholars engaged in internship pathways, providing evidence that these collaborations are translating into tangible transition outcomes.

The session also featured Joseph Mwaura, an Entrepreneur and Innovation Advocate with experience in operational leadership and ecosystem building. Joseph serves as Chief Operating Officer at Angaza Center, a social enterprise focused on expanding access to ICT training and digital inclusion programs. His work centers on operational strategy, partnership development, and scaling impact-driven initiatives that connect young people to meaningful opportunities.

The lecture gave the Mastercard Foundation Scholars space to reflect critically on their transition journeys and how they are preparing for life after graduation. They noted that the session challenged them to align their skills with market needs and prepare for where opportunity exists. They also took note of the fact that career growth requires adaptability, continuous improvement, and a focus on specialization and industry engagement. These reflections highlight a key outcome of the session: strengthening career intentionality. Scholars are not only gaining technical and soft skills but also developing a sharper understanding of where and how those skills can be deployed in a rapidly changing labor market.

By Vincent Juma As part of its Transition and Career Readiness strategy, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa hosted a virtual guest lecture on February 20, bringing together more than 75 Mastercard Foundation Scholars for an in-depth conversation on entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, and employability within Africa’s evolving innovation ecosystem.
