On March 9, the Disability Inclusion Office, in collaboration with the Partnerships and External Linkages Department, technical representatives from the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), and the Kenya Society for the Blind (KSB), convened a high-level consultative meeting aimed at strengthening institutional accessibility systems for students with visual impairments.<\/p>

USIU-Africa, a private university in Nairobi accredited in both Kenya and the United States, serves a diverse student population drawn from across Africa and beyond. As part of its ongoing commitment to equitable access and global academic standards, the university continues to strengthen its disability inclusion framework. The Kenya Society for the Blind, a national organization dedicated to supporting persons with visual impairments, brings longstanding expertise in assistive technology, orientation and mobility training, advocacy, and accessible resource development. The consultative meeting brought together representatives from both institutions to align expertise, define priorities, and outline actionable steps toward a structured collaboration.<\/p>

Held at USIU-Africa, the meeting focused on defining structured areas of collaboration that will enhance digital accessibility, faculty capacity, assistive resource development, and inclusive campus engagement. This engagement marks an important step toward formalizing a partnership grounded in sustainable, systems-level inclusion.<\/p>

A key area of discussion centered on strengthening digital accessibility within USIU-Africa\u2019s Resource Center. The university invited KSB to support Digital Accessibility Training initiatives within the Resource Center. Drawing on its specialized experience, KSB will contribute technical knowledge to enhance accessible content delivery and assistive technology integration. The teams also discussed involving KSB in auditing devices within the Disability Inclusion Resource Center to ensure compliance with accessibility standards and compatibility with assistive technologies. Additionally, both institutions agreed to collaborate on the Bookshare initiative, enabling improved access to academic materials in accessible formats for students with print disabilities. These measures signal a move toward proactive accessibility design – embedding inclusion within institutional systems rather than addressing it reactively.<\/p>

Beyond infrastructure, the meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional capacity across academic and technical teams. KSB will organize sensitization sessions for faculty members to enhance understanding of visual impairment and inclusive engagement strategies within teaching and learning environments. The society will also provide Orientation and Mobility training for USIU Africa interns who directly interact with visually impaired students, strengthening support systems within the campus environment. Together, these initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to inclusion that integrates academic, technical, and operational perspectives.<\/p>

The collaboration also extends into broader institutional engagement initiatives. Both organizations agreed to participate in each other\u2019s events to strengthen awareness and advocacy around disability inclusion. Additionally, KSB will offer internship opportunities to USIU Africa students, providing experiential exposure to the disability sector and contributing to professional development pathways aligned with social impact and inclusive development. The institutions also agreed to explore collaboration in adaptive sports programming, reinforcing the principle that inclusion encompasses academic, social, and extracurricular dimensions of university life.<\/p>

This consultative engagement reflects a strategic, systems-oriented approach to inclusive higher education. By combining USIU-Africa\u2019s institutional platform with KSB\u2019s specialized expertise, the partnership aims to enhance accessibility standards, strengthen internal capacity, and embed inclusive practices across university structures.<\/p>
