Associate Prof of Pharmaceutics Chair, Dept of Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice & Public Health
Omolo, Calvin, PhD., MPSK
Prof. (Dr.) Calvin Andeve Omolo is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He was awarded a College of Health Sciences Scholarship for Masters and PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. His research focuses on the design and synthesis of biomaterials that are employed in the formulation and characterization of various novel medicines for various diseases. In the last 6 years his focus has specifically been the development of novel materials and antibiotic novel drug delivery systems (NDDS) to target disease sites. Based on his research publications outputs, he can be regarded as one of the emerging researchers in this area globally. He is competing with leading researchers internationally and focuses on emerging cutting-edge nanotechnology approaches for designing “intelligent” pharmaceutical materials and architectural designs of new generation NDDS for improving treatment of infectious diseases and overcoming antimicrobial resistance. His current h-index is calculated as 17 (Google Scholar) with almost 607 citations, including papers in Q1/Top 10 pharmaceutical sciences, medicine and bioengineering journals such as Advanced Functional Material (IF 18.808), Journal of Controlled Release (IF 11.467), International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (IF 8.025), International Journal of Pharmaceutics (IF 6.510), WIREs Nanomedicine & Nanobiotechnology (IF 9.423), Colloids And Surfaces B-Biointerfaces (5.999), Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology (IF 5.062), Pharmaceutics (IF 6.525), Molecular Pharmaceutics (IF 5.364) and others. He has 38 publications, 5 book chapters and 2 book credits in reputable ISI journals and Publishing houses and 20 local and international conference contributions. Prof. Omolo has secured several scholarships/research grants. He has successfully supervised several students at Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral levels, several passing with distinction and achieving international and national awards/appointments. Prof. Omolo’s main areas of teaching are Physical Pharmacy, which provides students with a physicochemical background in the formulation of dosage forms, and Pharmaceutical Technology, which provides knowledge and skills to manufacture and evaluate dosage forms. Pharmaceutical Microbiology equips the students with knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical microbiology relevant to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, Pharmacy practice which entails teaching students the different fields of pharmacy where they can practice, and pharmaceutical management which equips the students with skills to handle and store different types of medications and excipients in their capacity as custodian of drugs. Prof. Omolo has achieved considerable international recognition as a scientist. These have included, invited reviewer of papers from several top ranking international journals (e.g. Journal of Controlled Release, Colloids and Surfaces, Nature), invited author to submit several review papers for top ranking journals (e.g. Journal of Controlled Release), invited author for a book chapter from global leader in drug delivery (Prof V Torchilin), invitations from international scientific bodies to review research proposals ( National Research Foundation of South Africa), invitations from several international universities to be a visiting scientist, an external examiner, and curriculum development and review both nationally and internationally. He has also established collaborations with leading universities internationally that have led to research grants and publications. He is currently a chair of Department for Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice, Member on the USIU-Africa Institutional review Board. He is also a registered Pharmacist with the Pharmacy and Poison’s Board of Kenya and member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), and Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa and Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya.
